The Texas Department of Transportation will begin a project to modify a portion of Farm-to-Market 3481 in Harker Heights, beginning Dec. 9, the department announced Monday in a news release.

The project, designed to increase safety on FM 3481, will widen the two-lane roadway -- also designated Stillhouse Lake Road -- with a continuous center-turn lane from FM 2410 to Del Rey Drive and add a new traffic signal at the intersection of FM 3481, Vineyard Trail and Cedar Knob Road.

The project is being undertaken by Texas Materials Group Inc., of Cedar Park, at a cost of $3 million, and is scheduled for completion in the Summer of 2020, weather permitting, the release stated.

TxDOT advises the traveling public to expect temporary lane closures, delays and some congestion between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily, within the work zone, for the duration of the project.

Motorists are urged to observe all warning signs and exercise caution when passing near construction personnel and equipment in the project area.
