Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic has been was fined $35,000 for directing a money sign toward officials in the final seconds of a loss to Golden State. Doncic walked toward officials while rubbing his fingers together with 1.7 seconds left in the 127-125 loss. The four-time All-Star apparently was upset that a foul wasn’t called when he missed a layup. Doncic wasn't given a technical foul for the gesture. The young superstar frequently complains to officials and is one technical away from his 16th this season, which would trigger a one-game suspension.

Jerry Green, a sports writer in Detroit for decades, has died at 94. The Detroit News reported his death. Green was known for a remarkable streak: He covered 56 consecutive Super Bowls for The Detroit News before staying home this year for health reasons. Green retired as a columnist at the News in 2004, but he continued to attend the NFL's big game and write about it for the newspaper. News editor and publisher Gary Miles says Green was an icon. Green, a native of New York City, died Thursday night. He was a sports writer in Detroit for The Associated Press before joining the News in 1963.

Miles Mikolas is sticking with the St. Louis Cardinals. The 34-year-old veteran right-handed pitcher has signed a two-year contract extension with the Cardinals that runs through the 2025 season. The two-time All-Star was about the enter the final year of his current contract with St. Louis. He is scheduled to make the second opening-day start of his career when the Cardinals host Toronto on March 30. Mikolas went 12-13 with a 3.29 ERA last season while helping St. Louis to the NL Central title.

The Texas Rangers aren't wasting any time in seeing what they have in Jacob deGrom. The two-time Cy Young Award winner will start for the Rangers when they open the 2023 season against Aaron Nola and the Philadelphia Phillies. Eight Cy Young award winners in all will start on opening day, as all 30 clubs will play on opening day for the first time since 1968. This will be the fourth career opening-day start for deGrom. He signed a five-year deal with the Rangers during the offseason that's worth $185 million.

The Bowling Green athletic department says a Memphis basketball player has been charged by Bowling Green campus police with assault after punching a Falcons player in the handshake line following a Women’s NIT game. Bowling Green says there is an active investigation and declined to release more information. As the teams walked toward center court following Bowling Green’s 73-60 win in the Round of 16 game, Memphis’ Jamirah Shutes stopped to talk with the Falcons’ Elissa Brett. After a short conversation, Shutes appears to throw a punch at Brett’s face. Brett fell toward the scorer’s table and onto the sideline.

Nick Bachem holds the lead at the halfway stage of the European tour’s Jonsson Workwear Open after a second-round 66 took him one shot clear at 13 under par. The German made a run of five birdies in six holes on his second nine and had eight birdies and two bogeys to go 6 under for the day in Johannesburg. Chasing him are France’s Romain Langasque and Finland’s Sami Valimaki on 12 under. Langasque made two eagles in his 64 and Valimaki had eight birdies and just one bogey for a 65.
