Former first-round pick Danny Shelton began his latest fresh start with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, hoping to earn a place in the middle of their defensive line after agreeing last week to a contract for the upcoming season. The 28-year-old Shelton appeared in 13 games for the Giants last season, where he rotated up front primarily as a run-stuffing defensive tackle.  The addition of Shelton came the same day that Kansas City waived offensive lineman Evin Ksiezarczyk, cornerback Lonnie Johnson and wide receivers Omar Bayless and Gary Jennings, who was dealing with a concussion that he sustained when he ran into a door during an indoor practice. Jennings was waived with an injury designation.

The Browns’ secondary got back a primary piece. Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward was activated from physically unable to perform list and will practice for the first time since Cleveland’s training camp opened after being sidelined with a sprained left foot. Ward was hurt during Cleveland’s final practice of minicamp in June and has been restricted to working on the side with trainers in camp. The 25-year-old Ward signed a five-year, $105 million contract extension in April, a deal that at the time made him the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback.

Minnesota running back Mo Ibrahim has returned for a sixth season. Quarterback Tanner Morgan, center John Michael Schmitz and wide receiver Chris Autman-Bell have, too. They’ve nicknamed themselves the “Encore Four." These super seniors have been with the Gophers since coach P.J. Fleck arrived in 2017. Ibrahim's decision to come back after a torn Achilles tendon ended his 2021 season was the catalyst for the others to join him. The Gophers will be breaking in plenty of new starters this year on both lines. Minnesota opens the season on Sept. 1 against New Mexico State.

It’s make or break for Nebraska coach Scott Frost. Frost has failed to deliver the wins expected when he made his celebrated return to his home state and the school he quarterbacked to a share of a national championship. The Cornhuskers go into the 2022 season mired in their worst stretch of football in over 60 years. Athletic director Trev Alberts announced late in last year’s 3-9 season he would bring Frost back. The 47-year-old coach had to take a $1 million pay cut and fire four offensive assistants. Nebraska opens against Northwestern on Aug. 27 in Dublin, Ireland.

The Hawkeyes went 10-4 overall and 7-2 in the Big Ten to win the West Division. The Big Ten schedule includes a home game against defending conference champion Michigan and a visit to Ohio State. The opener is Sept. 3 at home against South Dakota State.

The Denver Broncos have signed veteran inside linebacker Joe Schobert who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers last year. The team also activated prized offseason acquisition Randy Gregory and right tackle Billy Turner from the physically unable to perform list. Schobert's signing comes two days after linebacker Jonas Griffith dislocated an elbow in the Broncos' exhibition game against the Dallas Cowboys. Griffith is expected to miss up to six weeks. He had been penciled in to start alongside Josey Jewell.
